The game against Panathinaikos no longer has a tournament value - both teams have secured their places in the standings; in fact, the teams are playing just to finish the EuroLeague regular championship. At the same time, the meeting remains important: this will be the last performance of CSKA in the European tournament in the hall named after Alexander Gomelsky...
Europe says goodbye to USH CSKA

PREGAME BREAKDOWN

The meeting with PAO was supposed to take place on February 19, but was postponed due to the coronavirus disease of several players of the Greek team.

The Red-and-Blues were unable to play at Megasport because the arena was busy, so the army fans had the opportunity to hold the first stage of farewell to USH CSKA, which is planned to be demolished this summer.

Since the previous game vs Astana was played early during the Sunday, the team worked without days off. On Monday, the army team worked out with weights and trained individually, and on Tuesday they had a full training session.

Joel Bolomboy (ankle), Mike James (suspended), Nikola Milutinov (shoulder) and Dani Hackett (shoulder) remain out. Panathinaikos will not be able to count on Mario Hezonja, as he was added to the team after the game was supposed to take place accordingly to the original schedule.

REFEREES

Juan Carlos Garcia (crew chief, Spain), Robert Lottermoser (Germany), Milos Koljensic (Montenegro).

PREGAME QUOTES

Dimitris Itoudis, CSKA head coach:

The standings are already set, we secured the second spot and we are happy about it because we have a home-court advantage. Now we are trying to see some things that we had worked on, we try to share the time because we play back-to-back games, playoffs start in just few days and we have very important game in VTB League. So that’s our main targets. Still, definitely we will be focused and motivated to play against great opponent. After the coaching change they use big lineups often, with Papapetrou at 2, with zones and matchups. They are great rebounding team: we are leading in offensive rebounds in EuroLeague and they are second. They score a lot of hustle points, as this big guys are hustling a lot. And they have nothing to lose: it’s about pride and good closure of the regular season.

Nikita Kurbanov, CSKA forward:

Feelings are mixed, we don't feel that we are saying goodbye to the arena, this is only the last Euroleague game here. Emotions from parting with the gym are still ahead. That is why for us it will be an ordinary Euroleague game against Panathinaikos, an excellent team, it will be a good test in a fight before the serious stage of the season.

RELATIVITY” CONNECTIONS

CSKA head coach Itoudis spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach at Panathinaikos from 1999 through 2012. He helped the club win five Euroleague championships, 11 Greek League titles and seven Greek Cups during that span. Ian Vougioukas is with the club from that period, as well as Oded Katash who won 2000 SuproLeague as a player and returned as a head coach this season. CSKA assistant Andreas Pistiolis was also a part of that successful team.

Coach Darryl Middleton played for Panathinaikos for 5 years (2000-05) winning two EuroLeague titles with the Athenians.

Howard Sant-Roos made his EuroLeague debut with CSKA last season after joining the team mid-season.

Ioannis Papapetrou of Panathinaikos was a teammate of Daniel Hackett at Olympiacos for two seasons, from 2015 to 2017. They reached the EuroLeague championship game in 2017 together.

Nikita Kurbanov of CSKA and Panathinaikos big man Ian Vougioukas were teammates at Unics Kazan in 2013-14, when they reached the EuroCup Finals together.

Janis Strelnieks and Papapetrou were teammates with Olympiacos Piraeus in the 2017-18 season.

Vougioukas and Will Clyburn were teammates at ratiopharm Ulm for part of the 2014-15 season.
